Mayumi and Ben were in Japan from April 20th to May 7th. Fortunately, because there are no less than four public holidays during this period (it's known as Golden Week in Japan) Chris was able to spend 10 of the 17 days with them, enabling Mayumi to get a few things done such as renewing her driving licence and helping her mother move to a new care home.
The weather was excellent apart from three days of torrential rain, and a good time was had by all, especially Ben, who surprised everyone with how much Japanese he could still speak, and how much Japanese food he could still eat. Predictably perhaps, the only problem was that he became more and more determined to stay in Japan and not go back to college. However, thankfully, on the penultimate day he had a sudden change of heart, and went happily off to the airport.
Meanwhile Chris is struggling with an inevitable feeling of loneliness, but the summer holiday is mercifully only a couple of months away.
